Defining Excellence in Language Acquisition For Professional Purposes

ALAP Tests

ALAP Tests of English
ALAP has a suite of three General English tests: Levels 1, 2 and 3. Successful candidates of Level 3 may go on to take benchmark exams such as IELTS or TOEFL – they will have been well prepared for them. Students can take ALAP tests at any time of the year, as they are available entirely online
Candidates are assigned a user name and password and take the tests in an approved, secure location under strict examination conditions. As soon as each testis completed, results are emailed to a test administrator. ALAPonly requires one week’s prior notice to set up a test.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
These days it is increasingly likely that students want a specific kind of English – Business English, Legal English, English for IT, Hospitality English and so on. In addition to General English, we offer variants in ESP and EYL (English for Young Learners). We ensure that all ALAP tests conform to the same international standards and have created industry-specific tests that cater for all kinds of needs.

Which ALAP Level – 1, 2 or 3?
Students come to a language school and need to be put into class, but which level are they? It can be a time-consuming and laborious business to test them individually, and in any case, how many schools have got the staff spare to do the job? The answer is the ALAP Placement Test.

The ALAP Online Placement Test
The ALAP Online Placement Test is a 100 MCQ-item test of English Language competency. It lasts for a maximum of 50 minutes, after which candidates are automatically locked out of the system, although they may also finish early if they so wish. Candidates have complete freedom of movement forward and backward through the test, should they choose to amend their choice of answer. Their only constraint is time. This flexibility of movement applies to all online ALAP tests.
The 100 items are randomly selected from an item bank of more than 1000 possible questions. The ideal environment for the test is in a room of internet-enabled computers, with the local ALAP centre providing invigilation. We cannot provide candidates with certification if they take tests at home, or unsupervised.
Results are immediately available upon completion. The scores (plus a breakdown of individual answers) are automatically emailed to a local administrator. We are able to provide sophisticated item analysis on individual candidate performance. Approved institutions give us their requirements (number of regular candidates etc.) and we set them up as a local, independent centre, with their own unique ID. Tests are available 24/7 and 365 days a year.
